Midwest Interior Design Competition - 2024

QUALIFICATION FOR SUBMISSION

  • Open to interior designers, architects, builders, students.
  • ASID membership is NOT required to participate.
  • Projects must be completed between January 1, 2021 - March 31, 2024.
  • If an interior designer is employed by a firm, he/she must be the primary interior designer on record with the project.
  • Projects must be located in one of the following states:
  • Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, or Arkansas.

CATEGORIES

RESIDENTIAL

  • Single family home (new build or whole home remodel)
  • Single-use space (bedroom, living room, office, walk-in closet, outdoor space)
  • Kitchen
  • Bathroom

COMMERCIAL

  • Hospitality & Retail
  • Corporate & Wellness

ENTRY FEES

  • $100 per entry. Multiple projects in one category are not allowed.
  • Maximum 3 entries per participant.
  • Students - $50 per entry. Only one project per student. Projects from up to 1 year after graduation may be submitted.

JUDGING

  • The competition will be decided by randomly selected judges from the ASID national pool.
  • They are award winning designers in commercial and residential design and will judge entries in their respective disciplines.
  • The judges will use a points-based system with a maximum of 100 points possible.

WINNERS and AWARDS

    PROFESSIONAL DESIGNERS

  • 1 winner per category.
  • Each winner will receive a check for $1,000.
  • The project with the highest overall score will be awarded the Grand Prize.
  • Grand Prize is a trip to Paris for two people for Maison & Objet (September 5-9, 2024)
  • In case of a tie, the winner will be randomly selected from those entries.

    ALL WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT THE MWDAFF - 2024 INDUSTRY PARTY ON MAY 10, 2024

    INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS

  • 1 winner in student category
  • Winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship and internship at a top rated design studio.

  *Only one project will win the trip. Projects from the Student category are not eligible for the Grand Prize. The prize includes two round-trip economy tickets from Kansas City to Paris. Accomodations comprise a 4-night stay at a hotel, and two admission tickets to Maison & Objet. Please note that all other expenses will be the responsibility of the winner.

 

What You'll Need to Enter the Midwest Interior Design Competition

PHOTOGRAPHY:

  • For a Single Home (new build/whole home remodel) include up to twelve photographs. At least one is required.
  • For all other categories include up to seven photographs. At least one is required.
  • Optional: two hand-drawn or computer generated floor plans.
  • Optional: two hand-drawn or computer generated renderings and/or Sketch Up models.
  • Description on photos and floor plans should not exceed 150 characters.
  • Professional photography is strongly recommended for submission.
  • All photographic images minimum of 300 ppi, max 10 mb, in JPG format.
  • Photoshop may be used for color correction and light editing only.
  • NO new objects may be added to the photos.
  • Students: In lieu of photographs, student entries shall include conceptual drawings and supporting product and material photos with regard to this requirement only.

PHOTOGRAPHY RELEASES

  • It is the responsibility of entrants to have no-cost reuse rights from the property owner and photographer.
  • Photography and property owner release forms must be completed and maintained by the entrant.
  • If chosen as a finalist, the designer must submit forms to MWDAFF if requested.
  • MWDAFF retains the legal right to publish all submissions and photography for the sole purpose of promoting MWDAFF.

DESIGN CONCEPT STATEMENT:

  • A concept statement of 5000 characters or less must be submitted on the appropriate form.
  • Outline client goals, any challenges and how you achieved the design solution.
  • The statement should be written in full sentences and paragraph form.
  • This is an opportunity to help the judges understand specific issues or client requests you needed to work with and the reasoning behind your design direction or unique elements in the design.
  • At the beginning of your design concept, provide a short introduction/summary to be read at the awards dinner.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA:

  • The competition will be decided by randomly selected judges from the ASID national pool.
  • They are award winning designers and will judge entries in their respective disciplines; i.e. commercial, hospitality, retail, corporate, wellness, and residential.
  • All judging is done anonymously.

THEREFORE, NO IDENTIFICATION OF ANY KIND IS ALLOWED ON OR WITHIN ANY PART OF THE ENTRY, EXCEPT THE ENTRY FORM. ANY VIOLATION WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION.

IF ALL REQUIREMENTS ARE NOT MET, THE ENTRY WILL BE DISQUALIFIED PRIOR TO JUDGING. YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED.

 

POINT SYSTEM FOR JUDGING

For All Submission Categories - 100 points are possible

DESIGN INTENT (20 points total)

  • Effective Explanation of Design Criteria and Goals - 5 pts
  • Effective Explanation of Challenges - 5 pts
  • Quality and Clarity of Presentation - 5 pts
    • Easy to understand, complete and concise with proper grammar and spelling.
  • Quality and Clarity of Photographs - 5 pts

DESIGN EXECUTION (50 points total)

  • Overall Design meets the stated goals/challenges - 10 pts
    • Design fulfills the project requirements and enhances the human experience.
    • Exhibits outstanding or unusual use of materials, detail, products, layout, etc.
  • Solutions appropriate to the stated design statement - 10 pts
    • Craftsmanship
    • Innovative approach to design criteria
  • Creative use of space - 5 pts
  • Functional use of space - 10 pts
    • ADA or univeral design principles applied
    • Space plan functional and reflects the concept statement
  • Principles and Elements of Design - 10 pts
    • Cohesiveness of design elements and principles (proportion, pattern, rhythm, and balance.
    • Elements of design successfully used in the design solution (color, texture, line, form or value fitting.)
  • Effective use of lighting - 5 pts

USE OF MATERIAL AND COLOR (30 points total)

  • Overall effective use of materials and color.
    • Color scheme and composition - 5 pts
    • Functional use of materials - 5 pts
    • Creative use of materials - 5 pts
    • Appropriate and/or innovative for the space - 5 pts
    • Appropriately sustainable or environmentally friendly - 5 pts
    • Furniture, fixtures and equipment selections use appropriately for the space - 5 pts

JUDGING POINT SCALE 1-5

  • 1 - Sub-standard, imperfect, noticeable problems
  • 2 - Competent, minimal problems, superior product/execution, good design, polished, acceptable
  • 3 - Skilled, insignificant problems, superior product/execution, good design.
  • 4 - Exemplary, near perfect, top quality products/execution, superb design, inspired.
  • 5 - Immaculate, perfect, uncompromising design/execution, brilliant, extraordinary.
